The Success Principles for Teens is the first non-fiction book I have read in a while. That being said, this book has completely changed my life, as cliché as that may sound. It has changed my thoughts on myself, my life, where I’m going and how to get there, while also providing me with the behavioural tools to help me along the way.
Co-authors Jack Canfield and Kent Healy have complied 20 unique success “principles,” or strategies, that some of the most successful people have implemented. They claim that these principles are universal no matter what the destination, and include such strategies as goal-setting, visualization, facing and conquering fears, using feedback constructively, and asking other successful people how they have gotten to be where they are. Canfield and Healy’s motto is simple: “The principles always work if you work the principles.”
This is truly a book where you will get out of it exactly what you put in. It is not an easy or fast read; it is a book that you need to dedicate time and effort to so you can digest the invaluable lessons in it. If you think deeply about what is being said, take notes on important points you know you absolutely don’t want to forget, and wholeheartedly engage in the exercises in the book, you are sure to have valuable insights and see positive shifts in your thinking and behaviour.
The graphics, layout, and language make it accessible, so you can easily take the key points and apply them immediately. The anecdotes and metaphors are helpful in shining light on key concepts. Even though it is a self-help book, it is able to be engaging and entertaining without muddling the important messages in it.
I want to make one final note. The name is a misnomer, because I believe anyone can find use in this book despite their age (for example, I am in my twenties), but Jack Canfield has written a version for older audiences–called, simply, The Success Principles–if you’d prefer to peruse that instead.
